I have always looked to alternative methods for dealing with my depression: yoga, meditation; holistic health practices. However, it's still there. (for years, decades). I feel I need a medication but feel disappointed that the symptoms have not been alleviated through natural remedies. I'm about to make an appointment with a psychiatrist to help me deal with this disorder. Any advice on getting past this hurdle and not feel as though I'm weak because I need medication?

Can you please tell me if there is a hospital or facility with an understanding staff which deals specifically with self injury? I have a relative who inflects self injury and would like to try to get help without making the situation worse by committing him to a mental hospital. Who are the experts in this area? A family member on my husband's side constantly talks about the violence and drug problems that are in our society, carries a loaded gun in her purse, sits on the couch with the gun by her side awaiting her husband's arrival from work, has a very short fuse and has been violent with other family members. I am concerned that she may hurt someone some day. Can you advise me as to whether or not my fears are well founded? Dr. Pies' Answer
